Allergies

Allergies are an immune system response to a substance that the body mistakenly identifies as harmful. These substances, known as allergens, can be anything from pollen and pet dander to certain foods and medications.

When the body encounters an allergen, it produces antibodies that trigger the release of histamines and other chemicals, which cause symptoms such as sneezing, itching, swelling, and rashes. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can affect different parts of the body, including the respiratory system, skin, and digestive system.

Some common allergens include pollen, dust mites, animal dander, certain foods (such as peanuts, shellfish, and wheat), and certain medications (such as penicillin). Allergies can be managed with medications such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, and decongestants, as well as by avoiding the allergen whenever possible.

If you suspect you may have an allergy, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider to determine the cause and develop a plan for managing your symptoms. In severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur, which requires immediate medical attention.
